First topic message reminder :

Hi! My name is Michelle and I am a mother of two. I am really concerned about whether kids, especially mine should be watching Winx Club. My youngest daughter, who is 9, is constantly watching it online and on Nickelodeon and I do not like the messages this cartoon tells young girls. The show teaches that you always need to get revenge on people you don't like. Also the girls are so skinny and girls can start to feel that they need to look that way. My 18 year old daughter hasn't been eating and she's been throwing up and has anorexia because she says she wants to be skinny like the Winx. I am very worried about her and my younger daughter. The Winx always have boyfriends and I don't think its appropiate for my daughters to have boyfriends at their age. I srill need to take care of them. Their outfits are also too revealing and trashy and now my 9 year old daughter is going out and chasing after random boys and wearing revealing clothes because the Winx do it. My daughters are growing up too fast.

First of all, my name is Michelle too! Smile

Anyways, back on the topic. For my opinion, it depends on how the kids think of Winx Club. Some kids know that it is impossible for a person to be that thin like the Winx, but created like that anyway because it's a cartoon. Some kids want to be like the chracters they idolized on TV.

What I know is that some kids are also having problems like that, about Disney Princesses. Like, Princesses should have long hair, etc.

I guess it would be better for you to talk to your kids about it. Tell them that it would be impossible to be that thin like the Winx. And about the Winx having revealing clothes...Maybe you could talk to them that Winx is just a fanatasy. Not everything in Winx should be applied, like the way they dress.

In every cartoons, there are pros and cons in it. It may be a good or bad message to kids. So it would be better if the parents tell their children that not everything that is shown in TV is the reality. That's what my mother taught me.

I have been watching Winx Club since I was 6. But I never tried to be like them, or even look like them. Because my mom taught me about how unrealistic cartoons are, and how things on TV shouldn't be always applied to real life.

But like what others said, the animators have improved on how appropriate the Winx dress up. Before, they kind of show much skin. Depending on what outfit they are wearing. But as the seasons come by, they show lesser skin, but still does show. We really can't avoid that, it depends on the animators. If they want it to be revealing, then so be it. For me, that's how they think (not all though).

The things I have stated above are my opinions and suggestions. So not all of the things I have said may work or something.

I have to agree with with TheOne&Only.WinxClub here. If you are concerned for your children, talk to them about it to see what they feel about the show, and then either make a compromise, or not let them watch it at all. At the end of the day, we are fans on this forum, so we don't know what's best for your kids. At the end of the day, it's their choice.

If you recon that the girls are showing skin, look at some of the music stars today. They do it too (ever watch the Wrecking Ball music video? perfect example). It's everywhere and you can't blame that kind of today's society on a kids program.

It is appropriate. Ok, so you say "it's a must to get revenge" is taught by them? It's probably the Trix saying that. cause The Winx never said that(i mean besides aisha in S4 and several other cases) It's just the Winx doing their job fighting the Trix, etc. Well, they do wear kind-of showy stuff but it's up to your daughters to wear what they want, as long as it's not as inappropriate. Just control what they wear, See what they buy. The winx wear such clothes because the animators want them to look fabulous in them. So it's pretty much up to you. The Winx are Old enough to have Boyfriends. they are like what? 22?23? i don't know, if it's by years since the Winx have been created... They would be 26. But by seasons...22. THey are old enough. But I understand, they had boyfriends since Season 1 and Season 2 for Flora Season 3 for Aisha. but it's really up to your daughters to have relationship, as long as it's a good one. I mean, I had a girlfriend when I was 12! Plus, we just had the Hi-bye kind of personality. But you should check what kind of boys your daughters are with. All in all, It's up to you. Let them or not let them watch. It's a really good show. To prove it, I'm a guy, 15 years old, I've been watching it since I was 5 ^-^ At the end of the day, there are many moral values in the show. Be a good girl. Good girls are Fairies, Bad Girls are witches as the old saying goes in Winx. SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT. A little of Season 4 and Basically the whole of season 5 is based of environment stuff. PLUS we have Roxy, Fairy of Animals and Flora Fairy of Nature!Aisha fairy of Waves, Stella fairy of the Sun! I mean they have fairies with environmental based powers. Even Sophix, Lovix, Harmonix and Sirenix were based on environmental issues. Trust me, this is a good show. This show is appropriate. It may have some violence, there's a reason why it's rated PG-13. But the target audience is Girls aged 3-12

Anorexia is a mental issue; it's not caused by one thing. Something can add onto the chances, but it's not the only factor. And yes, I suppose in that case it's partly your business, but I don't see anything wrong with your daughter expressing herself how she wants to. Doesn't mean she's looking for attention. Just means she prefers to dress that way, just like how some people like wearing jeans while others prefer dresses.

Also what what Bloom joked with Stella about how she can eat? ummm yikes.
You don't need to dress sleazy to express yourself, especially not my young daughter. Have you seen how she dresses? My older daughter is already letting her wear mascara, eyeliner, and lipstick at 9 years old and she purposely wears belly shirts and short skirts and shorts to school before I always have to stop her. She always says she wants to look more attractive fore the boys. And you don't know my daughters personally so you can't say what caused their anorexia. Her anorexia started when she first started watching this show. She even told me how much she adores them and wants to look like them. This show may not be the only reason but it sure isn't helping. The animators need to make them more realistic looking. Isn't that what they with Barbie?

The problem is that what I teach them, they do not listen to me. Channels like Nick and Disney need to help parents and make it easier. I cannot be doing all the work.

You don't need to wear trashy clothes to look good. And aren't most of the animators guys? That says a lot. If it PG 13 why are girls 3-12 watching it? Doesn't make sense as I would never let my daughter go watch a movie like that.

Oh okay. Well, I cannot suggest anything about that since I do not know how to solve a problem about someone's view on Winx Club. Confused

But what I can suggest is that you may email Nickelodeon or Rainbow about it. Maybe they could help, and actually consider it. It would also make them aware about how some children may have problems like your children does.

Calling it 'sleazy' is just downright insulting to others, whom you're insulting due to appearance alone. If someone is comfortable in that kind of clothing you have no right to insult them anymore than they get to insult you. If someone enjoys wearing short skirts there is no reason for insults just because you dislike their clothing. Definitely should not be teaching your children to discriminate others because their wearing something revealing. I can understand not wanting your daughter to, but your choice of wording shows you have no respect for adults that do so either.
And no, I don't know them personally, but I do know that anorexia isn't something that happens from one thing only. Winx Club may have triggered it, but there was probably already a problem. It's also plausible for her to have already had anorexia by that point as well since a lot of people with it do hide it. I can't explain much about it because I've never actually had anorexia, but someone who's had it could go into more detail about how it certainly doesn't just pop up after one thing with nothing happening before that.
Also I don't think they actually did anything to Barbie, there was someone coming up with a more realistic Barbie but I didn't think anything came of it.

Okay, the question was if winx is appropriate for kids. Your 18 years old daughter is not a kid, I suggest you sit down with her and discuss matters between the both of you till you reach an agreement point. As for your 9 years old daughter, you should try to make her understand that it's just an animated show, that it's not real and she shouldn't take it for granted. (:

Winx is appropriate for children yes, that was your question and here is your answer but if you want to find solutions to help your kids to stop doing what you think is wrong then I can tell you we don't have the answer for that. This forum is filled with self-aware members that know what's right and wrong, children and teenagers go through phases, which is totally fine. We may not have the answers for your troubles but someone else does.

You shouldn't take it out on us, this is your family and you should be responsible enough to talk through things with them and help them, a lot of parents know what you're going through maybe you should talk with them about it but we're just a bunch of teenagers and children. You can't expect us to help you with your own issues.. or in this case your children's issues. I'm truly sorry and if you don't find Winx appropriate you could disable the channel right away. Nothing is going to stop you.
