| Subject: How Not to Create a Mary Sue or Gary Stu Sun Sep 08, 2013 4:41 pm | |
| In story telling and RPing there are characters that come along that defy every basic principle. These are Mary-Sues/Gary-Stues (Godmodding). These characters avoid damage, can have unlimited ammo, never lose power, and gain abilities and powers with no explanation. Sometimes these power can be ridiculous, be too powerful or don't even match up with what the character can originally do. Here are basic tips!
1) Have the powers written down so people know what they are. Try not to add powers that aren't related or try to give yourself new ones unless you say you found a book of some sort and an Overseer gives you permission.
2) The character needs to be hurt in some way during fight or be exhausted. Everyone has their limitations, even mental pain can be seen in this way. As someone is exhausted they shouldn't be able to keep up with the fight and some powers might even be impaired. Not everything is about fighting. Constant fighting lead to fatigue which causes a person to be tired for awhile.
3) Cash is important, but you have to say how you have it. You can't just say you have a million bucks without some way to back up to why you have it. If you're rich, own a company, win the lotto then that's perfectly fine.
4) A character has to have some flaw in them. This flaw is a weakness of some kind. It's not always part of their personality. Stella for example, has a flaw that she's scared to lose her family and isn't easy to trust anyone in that matter. It's a mental flaw, some can be personality traits or power hindrances. Even being drained is a flaw.
5) Weapons have limits to them. They can break or lose ammo. Even the best of weapons have a stress point, be that one you hold or someone created to be one.
6) Unless your name is Dr. Rebecca Holiday, you will have nothing unlimited. Nothing. Power, energy, weapons, etc nothing. Your OC has to have limitations, physical or not.
