The story I think is based off the oil spill that happened in April.

Speaking of oil spills, there was a major oil spill of the north coast of New Zealand about this time last year. And the oil just cleared away like a month ago. It was the worst marine disaster in NZ Razz

So I'd say with all the oil spills happening around the world, it would be a great inspiration for the creators of Winx.
