Low Spells
Sol Shock – A ripple of light emanates from Nim around a 5 metre radius and sends animals in range into shock. The spell only works efficiently on small mammals such as rodents and small birds who can stay stunned for up to 5 minutes (and can cause temporary amnesia, confusion and blindness afterwards). For large animals such as humans, the spell causes a very weak headache that lasts about a minute.

Glowing Pulse – A gold glow released from Nim’s palms that can aid in the recovery of damage tissue. It has been found most effective on plants and Nim has only successfully used it on young shoots. It’s effect on animals is slower and slows even more as the animal in question gets larger and the wound gets worse.

Radiant Beam – A ray of light energy is fired from Nim’s palm and has a double effect: a blinding stun and minute burn damage. However only the blinding effect (effect lasts about 5 seconds) has proven successful so far and the burn damage is ignorable as of yet.

Appearance:

Nimueh has rarely been noted as extraordinary in her appearance, she stands only slightly above the average height for her age group at 5’6” and in terms of physique aside from a slightly curvaceous figure, there is little else of note. Similarly in terms of fashion there is little that Nim wears to draw attention to herself; she has never gone out of her way to choose clothes that look fashionable over what she feels most comfortable in and aside from a rather decorated cane she carries, there isn’t much of note about her person. That is not to say that she is homely, rather than she has never had an interest in appearances.

Nim has a heart-shaped face with noticeably high cheekbones and rather fine and delicate features. Her almond-shaped eyes are a distinct warm amber colour often likened to melted honey and are framed by thick dark lashes. Her soft pink lips seem to naturally form a relaxed smile, giving Nim a rather approachable look. Her golden brown falls in gentle waves just past her shoulders, though for practical purposes is usually tied into a loose ponytail unless an elder sister wants to practice her braiding skills.

Strengths:

Creative Mind: Coming up with ideas and thinking outside of the box are a couple of things that come fairly naturally to Nimueh and it has certainly helped her on many occasions when she finds herself in the way of an obstacle (something that happens rather often for Nim).
Selflessness: Whilst Nimueh does have her own wants, needs and desires, she is willing to put the needs of others first. And it is in such deeds of kindness and the gratitude that she receives from which she draws strength and focuses a more positive side of life.
Artistic: Nimueh notably has skill in playing several instruments including the cello and the piano as well as a love and skill of writing through many years of practice.
Organised: Needing to know where everything is is rather important to Nimueh's everyday routine and so she has grown to become exceptionally neat and organised.
Well-developed hearing and smell: Not relying on her sight very much, Nimueh has to use other senses and so can locate and get much more from sounds and smells than most others can.

Weaknesses:

Blind: Nimueh has been blind from birth and cannot distinguish anything though her eyes appear perfectly functional.
Slow: Being unable to see where she's going, Nimueh has to move around very slowly which detracts from her physical abilities.
Inexperienced in using her powers: Her powers are not weak and have in fact shown to be fairly strong in past events. However with a lack of people wanting to help her control her powers let alone finding people willing to teach her, has meant that learning 3 very weak spells has taken her nearly a year.
Dependent: In terms of looking after herself, Nimueh has never been left alone for very long and cannot travel far without needing someone to guide her or help her- greatly reducing her ability to do what she wishes.
Conformist: Nimueh lacks the confidence to stand up for her own opinions and will let others dictate how she should act due to guilt. This can become dangerous if it starts leading up to a build up of frustration.

Personality:

At her core, Nim has always dreamed of adventure beyond the walls of her house and to be appreciated for who she is and for her skills, not to be pitied because of her disability. It was through this desire for something more from her life that led to Nim developing her creativity. Both writing and music became the main ways in which she would live out her seemingly distant dreams and through excessive reading, listening and practice Nim developed talent and skill for expressing herself through creative media. However there was always that yearning for something more than just writing about thrilling tales and yet guilt, dependence and fear have led to Nim simply conditioning herself to live with the disappointment of never being able to try all that she wants to do.

From the very start, Nim has been completely dependent on others to help her achieve everyday tasks and as a result she rarely feels confident enough to try things out for herself. She was also indirectly made aware when she was young that what made her different cost the whole family quite dearly, and the guilt of feeling somewhat of a burden to those around her has pushed her to have a low self-esteem and be more conformist- doing whatever she can to make their lives easier. And whilst Nimueh knows she cannot live like this forever, she is hesitant to make the first step and move away from family.

When interacting with Nimueh, she comes across as very calm and passive and in most situations she can keep a clear mind and calm approach without a second thought. She’s supportive and usually very generous, respectful and caring to most, as she would hope they would treat her too. However Nimueh is not immune to frustration and having people treat her like she’s an idiot or their lack of faith in her are both effective ways to fuel her anger. Moreover, if she ever gets angry she is forced to try and calm herself lest she an accident due to her powers spiraling out of control. Thankfully, listening to classical music or strolling along the beach and listening to the sound of the crashing waves is usually enough to calm her.

Around others, Nim is often quite happy to be ignored unless she needs help. Having gone to a school where everyone was sighted, she noticed that most children felt uncomfortable playing or interacting with her as they all got older. There were also several incidents of bullying, though Nimueh was usually able to ignore them and get on with her work. But this means that now she has left school, she doesn’t have much in the way of friends nor is she very good at socialising. She would regard herself as closest to her family though she does have one or two friends as well.

Academically, Nim is quite a bright young girl and did fairly well in the classroom, most notably in the subjects that have more abstract thinking such as English, philosophy as well as music. She struggled a little more with the sciences but passed with adequate marks. Nimueh does also enjoy the outdoors and giving various sports and activities a go with her eldest sister (however being outside alone does unnerve her), though she avoids team sports and competitions of all sorts and prefers to be amongst the supporters for that kind of thing.

History:

Nim was born as the youngest of 7 children to Balan and Guenivere Hayes. The family was not exceedingly rich but working as a technician and a pharmacist, Balan and Gwen earned enough to pay the bills and support their children. The birth of their seventh child was supposed to be a joyous occasion, but it wasn’t long after Nimueh’s birth that they realised something was not quite right with their daughter and their joy was put to an abrupt end as the doctor confirmed a few weeks laater that she was blind and would be for the rest of her life. It took the family several weeks to properly understand what this news meant for the family and what the impact caring for Nimueh would have on all of them, but with support they were determined to give Nim as good a chance as any of their children in life.

Growing up, her parents would do all they could to help Nimueh (though often overstepping how much help was necessary). And both took it in turns to take time off work to care for her, sacrificing a portion of their wage but for them it was well worth it. As a result, Nim grew very close to her parents but perhaps grew a little over-dependent on the two of them at that young age. They were also very protective over her and were reluctant to let her leave the house- certainly not unaccompanied, which often left Nimueh feeling slightly left out as her brothers and sisters would spend much of their time playing outside.

Her siblings were (in order of eldest to youngest) Morgana, Lance, Eleanor, Emrys, Fendrel and Brynna. And as a child Nim would consider them as her closest friends, notably Morgana who would always try and include Nimueh in what everyone was doing and often managed to persuade her parents to let Nimueh join in the games such as hide-and-seek, tag and the like that the siblings would play outside. She tried teaching Nimueh a variety of things, some Nimueh managed better than others. But no matter what the pair were doing, Morgana was always able to make her youngest sister laugh.

When she reached the age of 7, Nimueh left for her first year of school as her parents kept her back from pre-school to teach her necessary skills themselves. Being at school for the first time was quite a shock for Nimueh, given how differently everyone would treat her- being fascinated by the fact that Nim couldn't see. But whilst they seemed to ask Nim endless questions, they still made the effort to include her most of the time.

At the age of 8, Morgana and Lance took Nimueh camping at an activities centre where Nimueh got her first taste of sports such as horse-riding, archery and mountaineering and the thrill of the activities was what initially inspired her to have something more from her life than just staying at home. And only a few months later, her sister Eleanor discovered her powers as a fairy of the earth and from then Nimueh would dream of becoming a fairy and learning to fly.

But alas, life did not go quite the way she had planned and as she grew older, Nim still spent most of her time indoors and now she had to deal with the guilt that her eldest siblings were forced to take up part-time jobs to help their parents as they were not earning enough due to having to care for Nimueh. And not only did she begin to feel a little of a let-down at home but as she moved through the years at school, whilst not struggling academically, the elder children would start picking on those who were different and bullying others, including.

As a result, Nimueh kept to herself most often and was quiet happy to ignore the others, but when she was 14 and a group of children caught up to her as she was walking back with the aim to pick on her and brought her family into the matter- Nimueh snapped and in a series of events that Nim still doesn't quite understand, a burst of light erupted from her and was so strong it nearly blinded several of the children who had been closest to Nimueh and had stunned the others.

She was eventually told that she was a fairy and had magical powers- and the joy and wonder she felt at having these powers (even if she was quite ironically, a fairy of light) was put to a swift end as she was told that she was too dangerous to use her powers and so had to make an effort to suppress them. And even though she initially protested, her parents punished her for what had happened and in the end, she reluctantly agreed to try and ignore her powers and as her teacher recommended, she was sent to a therapist to be able to keep her 'temper' under control.

Since then, Nimueh felt as though she would never leave the house and never live the life of adventure and excitement as she had dreamt of as a child and was very quiet, spending most of her time alone practicing her piano, writing or studying. It was only about a year later that Morgana brought Nimueh a spell book she managed to get her hands on from the library she worked at. And though she didn't know much about magic, she would take Nimueh out on walks away from her parents where they could find a small patch of land to try and practice some spells. Unable to see what she was doing and with Morgana not able to help too much, the process was slow but with a lot of work, Nim managed to learn 3 very weak versions of spells.

But at this rate, Nim wouldn't be able to do much with her magic and so without her parent's knowledge, she wrote a letter to Alfea to ask for admission to the prestigious school for fairies. And a few weeks later, when she was accepted- she was elated. Unfortunately though, it wasn't a sentiment shared by her parents and they outright refused to let Nimueh go to a boarding school in Magix to learn magic.

Furious, Nimueh stormed out and without her cane she didn't get far before tripping over the sidewalk. The fall was serious enough to have an ambulance sent for, but she narrowly avoided any serious injuries. And seeing the accident made her parents only more persuaded that she shouldn't go- and Nimueh probably wouldn't have gone had Morgana stepped in and announced that she was accepting a job n Magix, so would be around the corner from Nim. And along with her other five siblings, they went through all the advantages it would have for Nimueh and the family if they let her go. Reluctantly, her parents agreed to let her go after giving the topic much thought. And so not much later, Nimueh and Morgana left for Magix after buying Silverwing, a falcon that ought to help Nimueh learn to fly.
